Event Name: Reforest the Bluegrass
Event Place: Shillito Park, Lexington, Kentucky
Event Date: Saturday, April 11, 2009
Event Time: 9:00am to 3:00pm
Begun in 1999, Reforest the Bluegrass is a cooperative effort among the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Division’s of Streets, Roads and Forestry, Water Quality, Environmental Policy and Parks and Recreation. More than 6,000 citizens have planted over 160,000 tree seedlings that improve streamside water quality, aquatic and grassland habitats and overall land stability.
Locations for the Reforest the Bluegrass planting efforts typically focus on restoring areas along streams. These streamside forests – also known as riparian buffers – serve to protect and improve valuable water resources. Reforest the Bluegrass activities not only provide urban watershed management through the creation of future tree canopy but also recharge groundwater through absorption through a forest floor and the remove turf grass areas from constant mowing. The planting efforts use native tree species that bring natural balance to the ecosystems.
Advanced regisration for the event is now closed. Please come out to Shillito Park on Saturday between 9am and 2pm. Register onsite and help us Reforest the Bluegrass.
